LITHUANIA A Lyga
The A Lyga, also known as the Lithuanian First League, is the top professional soccer league in Lithuania. It was founded in 1991 and is currently composed of 10 teams. The league size has varied between 8 and 12 teams in the recent seasons. The league is run by the Lithuanian Football Federation (Lietuvos Futbolo Federacija).
The A Lyga season typically runs from March to November.
The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the champion. The bottom two teams are relegated to the second-tier Lithuanian Football League, while the team that finishes in seventh place enters a playoff with the team that finishes second in the Lithuanian Football League to determine which team will play in the A Lyga the following season.
The most successful team in A Lyga history is FK Žalgiris.
